Borderline diabetes, also known as prediabetes, is a condition that occurs before you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This is when your blood sugar is high but not high enough to be fully pass as a Diabetic patient. So, you can still have your fingers crossed because you have the chances to prevent this from happening. Before, we tell you the the borderline diabetes symptoms and various ways to prevent it, first know a few things.
So, What Actually Happens?
Prediabetes can be identified into two kinds:
- Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG)
- Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)
When you get your blood sugar levels tested 6 hours before eating, it should range between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL, you are then diagnosed with Impaired Fasting Glucose or IFG.
After a glucose challenge test, and a resting period of about 2 hours, if your sugar level is anywhere between 139 mg/dL and 200 mg/dL, you will be diagnosed with Impaired Glucose Tolerance.
It is always better to get an HbA1C test. This test gives you a report of your blood sugar patterns for a period of about 2-3 months. It is always better to work with an overall picture than to work with just a single blood sugar test. If your HbA1C test ranges from 5.7% to 6.4%, it is an indication of pre-diabetes.
Borderline Diabetes Symptoms
Here is a list of signs that are given below. This is just to keep you aware and not scare you! Even if you do have these symptoms, there are always ways, it can be treated.
1. Cuts That Take A Longer Time To Heal
You might have a vague idea of how long your wounds take to heal. If you feel that, even small cuts or wounds are taking more time to heal than required, don’t wait anymore. See your doctor immediately.
Do you feel tired by doing just nothing? Did you have a stronger stamina before? Was this feeling of exhaustion recent? You can ask yourself these questions and start to notice more on how and why you are getting exhausted really fast. If you do not have an answer, your doctor is only a call away.
3. Excessive Thirst
Excess thirst or a feel to drink more water is one of the most common borderline diabetes symptoms. This may not be very noticeable, you might tend to think, that the changes are due to other external factors. This is where you have to be very cautious and start to notice when you feel thirsty. If your thirst continues even under normal climatic conditions, then it is something that needs to be checked.
4. Gum Inflammation
You might find some unusual inflammation in your gums, which might seem very usual. But it is always best to consult your doctor to check for prediabetes.

How To Diagnose Prediabetes?
if you feel that there is something unusual with your body, it is always better to get yourself checked. At least, you either prevent it from taking over your life, or you overtake it by preventing it from controlling your life.
As said by the WHO (World Health Organization), one of the best ways is to take up an A1C test. This test, as I had mentioned earlier is a reliable source to check the pattern of your blood sugar. Unlike the normal fasting sugar, you do not have to be on a fast to give your blood. The sample can be taken any time during the day. I am hoping this might be some good news for some of you!
Apart from this, your day-to-day intake of sugar does not affect this test.
So, ready to get yourselves an A1C test?
Let’s Make A Change
Prediabetes is not going to stick on to you unless you want it to! All you need is an E and a D. You must be thinking I am out of my mind! Let me put it out for you.
So, E is for Exercise and D is for Diet
The prediabetes condition is reversible with some lifestyle changes, which can prevent you from entering into the Type 2 diabetic phase.
- Exercise: Make it a point that you devote time for a minimum of 150 minutes of activity per week. This should reduce your weight from 5%- 7% which is one of the best ways for prevention.
- Diet: It is better to eat healthily and live light. Focus more on consuming foods that are less sugary and are rich in carbohydrates like grains, beans and starchy kinds of foods. Avoid processed baked foods. You can consult your doctor or your dietitian to know what kinds of foods can be consumed.
If you can work towards reducing about 7% of your body weight, it will make a huge difference in the prevention of diabetes. People can reduce the risk of diabetes by over 58%. Why would you want to let go of something like this? A great chance to keep yourself fit!
