If we eat too less or too much of anything, it starts to become harmful. Too much of sodium can affect various parts of your system like the kidney, cardiovascular system, brain, bones etc. Now you don’t want that do you? So let’s see what happens if you eat too much sodium.

How To Know If You Have Too Much Sodium?

Not many of us are aware that we do have the habit of consuming too much salt. So here are a few signs that will help you know if you are tawhat happens when you have too much sodiumking in too much without realizing it.

A study showed that the brain reacts to the sodium in the body, the same way it reacts to cocaine and heroine. So, this explains why we get addicted to sodium-filled foods without even realizing it.

1. The Brain

The brain is the most critical part of the body. If something goes wrong, it could easily affect the other parts of the body. With an increased intake of sodium, it results in the increased risk of cognitive decline. This is especially for the case of older people. Though the reason is not yet clear as to why, but high sodium levels are known for cognitive decline.

2. The Kidneys

The kidneys are one of the most common parts that are being affected by high levels of sodium intake. Since the sodium play the important role of telling the body when to replenish water and when to dispose of the water. If the sodium levels are messed up, it can mess up this process. One can be when the fluid is not disposed of properly, which is the reason for high blood pressure. If it is the other case, where the kidneys are made to work tirelessly, it can lead to kidney diseases.

One of the other problems caused is renal stones or kidney stones. This is caused due to urinary calcium which is caused by high sodium intake.

3. The Heart

Due to the fluid problem, it causes high blood pressure. High blood pressure is when the blood is forced through the arteries when the blood is pumped. This can cause serious issues like a stroke or heart attacks. So in case you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, reduce your sodium intake.

4. The Skin

Consumption of excess salt can cause a condition called edema. Edema is where you might find a particular part of your body swollen. This can be mostly in your hands, ankles, legs and feet. This is an extreme symptom of edema. However, it is not necessary that edema is caused due to high sodium levels, there can be a lot of other reasons too. It can be health concerns from mensuration to genetic disorders.

5. The Bones

With excess fluid going out of your body, it leads to excess calcium excretion through the body, which then causes thinning of the bones. Over a period of time, this is what experts say lead to osteoporosis. This is more in the case of postmenopausal women.

6. Risks Of Cancer

You must slowly work on reducing your intake of salt and processed foods. As this can lead to stomach ulcers and then stomach cancer. This is because excess salt can affect the inner lining of the stomach damaging the tissues and cause it to become unhealthy.

As I wrote earlier, too much of anything will only cause harmful damage to the body. If you are used to taking a lot of salts, try to reduce your salt intake little by little. In case you are having any signs of high sodium intake, it is always better that you visit your doctor to avoid any kind of complications.
